Dr. Michele Raney made history as the first woman to winter-over at the South Pole, serving as the physician for the U.S. Amundsen-Scott station in 1979. She has remained active in Antarctic affairs and medicine for decades. For her contributions, the U.S. Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names decided in 2007 to name Raney Peak in Antarctica after her.
